I’ve barely posted any pics of this summer’s butterfly rearing. For the past few summers, I’ll spend an hour or two a week searching for monarch eggs on milkweed leaves, or for swallowtail eggs on fennel, lovage, dill, rue, etc. Butterfly sightings have been quite low this year, though. Perhaps their activity was delayed because of the prolonged cool season through May.
In any case, after not finding much of anything for these two species, I found more than a dozen swallowtail eggs in one spot a couple of weeks ago and I collected six or so monarch eggs yesterday. The monarch shown above developed from an egg I found in July. It emerged from its chrysalis this morning.
